we spend what i hope will be the first of many episodes with charles pelkey, a guy who, like me, has done a whole lot of different stuff during his life. we'll be talking about some of them tonight, and in weeks to come. check him out at velonews; he's "the explainer." that's a pretty cool title, i think. i'm just "the mostly reverend" or "the devil" or some other mischievous monikers. "the explainer" seems like a guy you'd run into in a science lab, not on the #1 radio cycling show in america. maybe he's got some 'splainin' to do.

just days from the start of the 2010 professional cycling team, i talk with jason mccartney, arguably one of the country's most successful professional cyclists. back in the johann bruneel/lance armstrong stable, jason leaves for australia for the tour down under on what is likely to be another long, varied and successful season for the rider from iowa city by way of burlington. what motivates the quintessential worker of the pro peloton? and jon severson, another former iowan, talks a bit about his 2d annual peak regions cycling bicycle show in colorado springs early next march. it will be another FULL hour.

another sunday, and another evening spent with some of the best bicyclists in the world. thanks to a number of glitches, we did NOT have rebecca rusch nor todd wells. we DID manage to chat with troy wells, however. we hope to have these technical problems cleared up by next sunday. sorry, but check out the franco pellizotti stuff from the tour of missouri as a bonus podcast! ________ [here's what we had planned...tonight: in her first effort at the vaunted ledville 100, rebecca rusch did fairly well. she won it. what's up with THIS adventurous spirit, anway? ***** in the second part of tonight's show, i talk with todd and troy wells, fresh from another sunday in the park. these brothers are on the american professional cyclocross circuit, and on weekends, they tear up whatever the various promoters throw their way. midwest cross fans know them for their amazing abilities to master mount krumpit and all the other tricks that cross-meister john meehan concocts each year in his now 3-day jingle cross rock cross festival thanksgiving weekends in iowa city.]

just before air time, i learned of the deathof my friend and fellow cyclist mark grgurich, who was out on a sunday morning ride east of cumming, iowa, on county road G-14. anyone who rides a bike in central iowa has ridden that road several times, past the apple orchard into cumming. mark was heading home, eastbound, when he was struck and killed by a driver in a white pickup who continued on and left mark behind.we talk about this incident to open the show on a somber but all-too-real note.then i talk with craig cooper of grinnell's bikes to you about a charter they are organinzing to the "hilly hundred" ride in southern indiana the weekend of october 23-25. check out their website [biketoyou.com] or the ride site [hillyhundred.org] to learn more.THEN, in the second half, we talk about actual racing, including next week's TOUR OF MISSOURI.WE HAVE STUFF TO GIVE AWAY!! go to my personality pages at kxno.com to learn what and how!

dave and i rant about idiots and misfits who don't like bicycles, about do-nothings who claim to help bicyclists, and finally with lowell kellogg, a fixture on the national and international bike racing scene for years, and who a few years ago turned his energies to coaching one of the most successful juniors programs in the nation, and who NOW wants to share some of his considerable expertise by running for the board of trustees of our governing body, usa cycling. listen and learn why...

it's another live remote broadcast, this time from a pergola at the tiffin, iowa, i-80 rest area, just 30 minutes--and another world--removed from the return of bicycle racing to downtown cedar rapids. after 12 years and a 500 year flood, northtowne/HBA and the gold pointe fitness folks brought big-time racing back to the streets of cedar rapids in the form of the iowa state criterium championships, and what a comeback it was. a VERY exciting day of racing, to say the least.and that's just the first part of the show. in the second part, we discuss a tragic cyclist death in rochester, minnesota, to see if cities can learn anything to actually make themselves bike SAFE as well as bike friendly.

imagine the scene: it's a hot, humid, windy mid-summer day in a major metropolitan city deep in the tobacco belt. our hero, an aging yet determined amateur competitive cyclist, has abondoned--for just a week--his weekly radio cycling show, hoping to gain a meager toe-hold on the upper echelons of masters cycling in the united states......gripped by a sudden wave of fear and tripidation, he calls in to his radio station during the regularly scheduled time of his show. .....what greets him?fill up your iced tea glasses, and listen along, to the episode i call "the case of the tobacco road mugging."

i raced five times in three days and lived to tell about it. i am joined on the line by jerry cross, vice president of the manchester wheelers, at 125 years old, the oldest cycling club in england, and nick frey, originally of des moines, and now that he's a princeton grad, he's moving to colorado. but he's in town, and the three of us talk about the cycling peloton, and the need for etiquette, smarts, skills, and knowing when to pull.

tonight we talk about CYCLISTS, experienced ones and relatively new ones. some of the friends of the kim west radio cycling show have been racing at the nature valley grand prix, which ended today with the incredibly difficult stillwater criterium. tom zirbel, of bissell pro cycling team, and whose hometown is clear lake, had led the race since capturing the stage one time trial last week. his team worked hard all week to defend his leader's yellow jersey, but today, two-time defending champion rory sutherland's third place finish on the stage was enough to give him the overall GC win by mere seconds. on a happier note, however, former iowan amanda miller, who demonstrated her winning form memorial day weekend by winning or finishing second every day, surged in today's women's criterium, finishing fourth, and capturing the best young rider's jersey in the women's race. downtown sydney brown did likewise to the amateur ranks, finishing hard to battle to first in the non-professional ranks. des moines native nick frey, who had been leading in both the men's young rider and amateur divisons earlier in the week, also was expected to finish high, but as of this late hour, the results have not been posted. i hope to have interviews with all of these racers for next week's show.but on TONIGHT'S episode, we are joined by connie caldwell, of mable, minnesota. connie, whose internet fame comes under the guise of pedalgrl through her blog "learning to ride" is one year into a lifestyle conversion, wherein she gave up her car and started getting around southeast minnesota and norhteast iowa exclusively by bicycle. this 38 year-old mom of three has been blogging about her experiences, and it not only is compelling reading, it's good radio, too.we'll have her back in the coming weeks, so listen in, read her blog, and get up to speed, folks.

#55-hillis BIKES! & plymouth county

hillis elementary IN THE HOUSE!!.....i am joined by fifth-grader cooper mortensen, who talks about this week's bike to school activities at his northwest side elementary school. and it is a full slate! later we are joined by scott reel and his kindergarten son, lightning logan reel, who talk about how this whole thing happened to come to pass.how DO you get an ENTIRE school excited and involved in a bike to school WEEK full of activities, that spills well over just one week? listen as cooper, scott, and lightning logan tell us how......later, we speak with erin schroeder, a mother of four from rural lemars, iowa, who is lucky just to be alive after she was attacked by a car load of young idiots who hurled a full can of beer at her, striking her in the head, knocking her unconscious, causing her to crash into the on-coming lane of traffic on a plymouth county road.erin describes how she got back to reality, only to discover a law enforcement community that treated her no better than the as-yet unidentified carload of assailants......QUERY: is there a SINGLE COUNTY in iowa that understands the simple proposition that IT IS A CRIME TO ASSAULT A BICYCLIST?.....DON'T SPEND MONEY IN MADISON COUNTY continues.

#53-the old capitol weekend

with producer dave cornelison holding down the studio, an exhausted kim west phones in the show from iowa city's java house, throwing down the caffeine for the long, stormy drive home, and trying to piece together his recollections from the daytona 500 of the midwest cycling season, the old capitol weekend. from saturday's sharon center road race to teh VERY exciting and highly animated pro1,2 criterium, there was HOURS of extrememly exciting racing, and about 10 minutes to get it together. kim recorded some great interviews, but they'll have to be added as bonus podcasts......suffice it to say that mark guthart and crew did ANOTHER great job of producing a kick-ass weekend of racing.

my look at the masters of cycling, the queen of the classics, the hell of the north, paris-roubaix. says it all, non?.....plus, we finally get big-time hollywood filmmaker billy savage on the show to talk about the Endurance Sports award-winning 2009 Cycling Film of the Year, KLUNKERZ.good stuff, this......on a maddening note, we talk about yet another in a series of unchecked aggression against iowa bicyclists, this time, a hit-and-run by an insane farmer and his trailer, who ran over doug smith, and continued on his way, only to return AFTER dropping off his lethal load. EDUCATE AND ARREST!!

#50 -- klunkerz & showers-UPDATE!

as with all good, live talk radio, the experienced host must be ready to make on-the-fly changes to the actual content of the show, as it goes out over the airwaves. that is exactly what happens tonight, as dave and kim get so engrossed in our chat with nancy and randy that they barely have time to chat with our european correspondent stewart barker. billy savage, director of KLUNKERZ, will instead appear NEXT sunday, in episode 51.

tonight, after a quick review of today's tour of flanders, we talk with old friend billy savage, the director of the instant classic KLUNKERZ, a movie about the birth of mountain biking featuring legends and previous guests on the kim west radio cycling show charlie kelly, gary fisher, and tom ritchey......in the second half of the show, we talk with nancy lewis and randy fay, keepers of "warm showers.org" a website with which all cyclists who hope to undertake any kind of long cycling adventure should make themselves familiar. listen in to learn why and how. during tonight's episode, we refer to some of randy and nancy's websites, including hobobiker.com, warmshowers.org, and adventurecycling.org. check them out!.....you'll also notice that we did NOT get to billy savage tonight, due to our chat with randy and nancy and stewart barker. rest assured, billy savage will be on NEXT sunday's show, so go out and buy, beg, borrow or steal KLUNKERZ and WATCH IT, then tune in next sunday night, easter sunday, and give a listen, and call in to talk to billy savage.

snow and ice dashed the dreams of so many budding midwestern bicycle racers this morning, who were forced to ride their bikes outside for perhaps longer than the 24 miles envisoned by the annual kent park race near tiffin, iowa. so instead of the well-polished episode i had prepared to cover this ritual of spring, we turn to ken sherman and his efforts to breathe life into bicycle legislation stalled up on capitol hill. i get on my soapbox against the farm bureau and others-mark wyatt-for not stepping up and speaking out for or against this bill. THIS IS THE LAST TIME I WILL TALK ABOUT IT.until it gets introduced next year.

#47-my dinner with duffy

i am joined in the kim west radio cycling studios tonight by the cyclist's cartoonist, cartoonist and cyclist brian duffy. many folks know duffy from his 25 years as the front-page editorial cartoonist of the once-glorious des moines register. many more of you will know him as the host of ragby for many years, one of the few in recent years who have both held the title of ragby host AND actually been a cyclist. and some of you may know brian as a member of the local cycling community. but how many of you know that brian duffy is ALSO known throughout many corners of the world as one of the slickest dice tossers the world has ever seen?i certainly didn't know that prior to tonight's episode, and i leave the studio a poorer yet wiser man for it.listen to ths show and see what YOU can glean.

#46-bill of rights, or wrongs?

on tonight's episode, we conduct what might well be a premature post-mortem on the iowa bike coalition's bicyclist's bill of rights. the motoring public sees this piece of legislation as the worst thing to happen since the speed limit, while bicyclists are divided on what some see as the way--or the first step--to enlightenment, while others see the bill as restricting, removing, or otherwise limiting long-standing but generally ignored rights to the safe use of the roadways in iowa while at the same time generating further and additional ill-will and hostility at the hands and steering wheels of the very vehicles that could very well kill them. .....guests tonight include an in-studio mark smith, representative from marshalltown, and the bill's floor sponsor in the iowa house of representatives, and from iowa city, janelle rettig, of the iowa bicycle coalition. calling in from nearly wisconsin later in the show is lee venteicher. listen as the bill's advocates try to persuade dave to come over to the dark side in support of this legislation. .....and me? what do you think?

to make amends for the lost interview from january 18, i called charlie kelly back up, and we had a wonderful time talking, and talking, and talking. again, technical difficulties ensued, but i think with the marvels of the mystery mixing board at the kim west radio cycling studios, i can present you the magic of my conversation with charlie kelly, one of the fathers of mountain biking, and an all-round great guy, to boot. we cover these topics:"when charlie met gary" ... "the birth of the mountain bike" ..."repack, the first downhill time trial" ... "the first mountain bike tire" ..."why there are mountain biking magazines" ... we close with what charlie kelly is up to nowadays, including some comments about the documentary, "klunkerz."

listen up, kiddies! want to know the BEST way to train for next season? throw away those rollers, and take if from a guy whose crossed the finish line first 422 times. outdoors. we talk about training and many other things with scott dickson, who over the course of his career has picked up the hat trick of national championship jerseys in the time trial criterium, and road race while amassing those 400 wins, along with 33 complete years of riding his bike [that is, nary a missed day each year]. he's done so much on a bike that we didn't even get to his string of monthly centuries. we do touch on his three victories in paris-brest-paris, and how things have changed for cyclists since scott did his first race on the iowa state campus--in 1965! and we begin tonight's show with a call from stewart barker, a long time fan of the show, from near london, england. when i tell you my radio show is heard around the world, i ain't lyin' to ya! so listen in to hear what my scottish listener stewart has to say about cycling on the OTHER side of the atlantic. and thanks for calling, stewart!

#35 kim's epic xmas show

"it was a dark and windy night; the thermometer was frozen at -5F at the kim west radio cycling studios, the winds were howling at between 25 and 35 miles per hour. the windchill was somewhere between east peru and st. elsewhere. and yet, the brave and daring radio show host swung by the studio during his daily ride to do the show. he claimed he was a bit over-dressed." the rant THIS week was about the overuse of "epic" to describe one's cold-weather bike ride. kim has long felt that the LAST person to describe one's ride as "epic" should be the person who did the ride. it's like george dubya bush declaring that he's gonna be remembered as a great president. it just isn't done. during the last 20 minutes of the show, kim reads "gracie goat's big bike race," erin mirabella's delightfully written and illustrated [by lisa horstman] story about gracie goat and her friends, and how gracie manages to overcome her personal fears to learn to ride a bike, and in doing so, learns about herself and others, AND experiences the joys of bike racing. all this, and it's a great story, too. from velopress.

it was a dark and stormy night in iowa. our intrepid radio show host pulls over in grinnell, while his guests, the mayor of ankeny, steve oordt, and lisa hein, of the iowa natural heritage foundation, bask in the comfort of the kim west radio cycling show studio. but the show must go on, and with the help of dave, it does.we begin this week by continuing last week's discussion of the proposed half-mile long, 13 story high bicycle and recreation trail bridge over the des moines river, a critical part of the ankeny-woodward leg of the monster 100 mile loop, a recreational trail around central iowa.the supporters of the trail have until december 10, 2008, at 1000 am to raise the remaining funds to qualify for a vision iowa grant to build the final piece of this $14.7 MILLION dollar project. and then, in part two, kim and dave are joined by iowa city's kenny lefler, a contributing editor to the kim west radio cycling show. together, the three talk about the just-concluded jingle cross rock, and monster of its own. this race, for five years, the grand finale of the iowa bicycle racing calendar, and a prelude to the cyclocross national championships in less than two weeks in kansas city, features the very best the sport has to offer, both on the local as well as the national scene.and mother nature cooperated with the grinch, who grudgingly plays host to the two-day event. this year's uninvited guest: sunday, muddy sunday.listen to this episode, and watch for a special BONUS podcast with more sights, sounds , and special guest interviews, including the winners of each days premier races, troy and todd wells, along with the aforementioned grinch, and many many more.

kim and dave talk about things for which they are thankful. [note: kim does NOT mention roller races.]he DOES mention the bridge which is the topic of the rast of the show, the proposed landmark bridge over the des moines river at madrid, iowa. 13 stories high, a half mile long, and truly a work of art. all this, but they're still $100K shy of their $14.7M goal. you have until december 10 to help them reach their goal. the same people who have brought you wetlands andother trails in iowa, the iowa natural heritage foundation. mark ackelson is here to talk about this ambitious project.

WHEW! i talk with tour of missouri riders sterling magnell of rock racing and bryce mead, of jelly belly and winner of the kim west radio cycling show's most aggressive rider award at this year's rock island criterium, about the upcoming tour of missouri. listen as sterling and bryce tell us of their seasons thus far, and how they have been preparing for their team roles for the 2008 edition of the professional season's big finale in just two weeks. also, in-studio guests oakley rob ver steegh, chris maharry, and bikeiowa.com's scott sumpter are joined by bike instructor lori lapointe on the phone as we begin a conversation and quest to bring together the cycling community for the betterment of our two-wheeled cause--as soon as we can figure out what THAT is! tonight's show is just one of the early steps that will hopefully result in some better defined goals and objectives in OUR efforts--the efforts of the cycling community--to educate the public at large about what it will take to TRULY make iowa "bike friendly." everyone seems to want to do what THEY think is best for cyclists. the problem is whether we cyclists really know ourselves what we want. personally, i hope we can figure out before we get screwed again.

episode 12: stuff; lots of stuff.

episode 12, a quickie, in which kim mistakenly refers to a late game with the isotopes as the reason tonight's show is only 40 minutes long. still, he covers a laundry list of topics: a preview of next week's clear lake blues, barbq and bikes races, his on-going test of the swell banjo brothers messenger bag, his power tap hub, annoying VERSUS ads, free food, stupid supervisors and engineers, good cop/bad cop, drive-thrus, drive-bys, the 80-35 music festival, and features music by euphorquestra. that's a lot of stuff. george carlin would be proud.

episode 11: my LAST day in adel?

episode 11 -- "crackheads, alcoholics, and bicyclists" -- at least that's what the dallas county board of supervisors believes. yup, one of them lumped us in that illustrious group [i've got it on youtube, if you don't believe me]. why do you suppose THAT is? listen as kim and friends talk about the latest hare-brained efforts in dallas county to require groups of TEN cyclists to carry AT LEAST a MILLION dollar liability policy to use their precious roads. and all because the county doesn't want to have to do their job: build and maintain safe roads. wanna take a stab at how i feel about it?
