QUICK HIT: Pizza TV?

This is a new one.  With the new SEC TV deal being announced today, I guess the pizza folks didn't want to be left out. 

From Forbes:

We live in the golden age of pizza delivery. With online ordering, apps, and plenty of places to choose from, it’s a great time to be a pizza lover.

And now, Domino’s is taking the experience to a whole new level with its new Domino’s Live program that will let customers watch a live video stream of the making of their pizza, from start to finish.

The system employs five cameras, creating “pizza theater,” and opening up their kitchen to the customers.

This is going to be breathtaking television.  Lets just hope the stream is in HD.

QUICK HIT: Would the Cubs leave Wrigley?

Can you imagine a Chicago Cubs team residing anywhere besides Wrigley Field? 

I can.

For the first time today, Cubs owner Tom Ricketts publicly threatened to move the team away from Wrigley if improvements aren't approved.  Good move by Ricketts.  The politicians need to feel a little pressure to make the right decision.

Rickett's quote was something along the lines of, "we need to run a business, not a museum."  It's a good point.  No one in major league baseball (or any intelligent fan) would argue the stadium isn't in need of updating.  Boston proved you can still retain the magic of an old stadium with some modern upgrades.  

The dispute with the "rooftop" owners seems crazy to me.  Sure, the Cubs get 17 percent of the revenue, but shouldn't it be more like 90 percent?  If the Cubs go away, I doubt too many people buy tickets to look into an empty stadium.  When the dust settles, I don't think the rooftop folks will have much of a leg to stand on - but then again, I'm no attorney.

If the lawyers say the contract has to be honored, then fine.  The folks that own the rooftops can continue to sell tickets to see games...they may just have to put a very large telescope on the roof. 

One of the rooftop owners, Beth Murphy, was quoted as saying, "The reason the Cubs are such a tourist destination ... is because it's a ballpark in a neighborhood." 

Sorry, Ms. Murphy, but you are mistaken.

The reason the Cubs are such a draw is because they haven't won in 100 years, and Chicago is a rabid sports city.  I'll agree the ballpark is a part of the equation, but not the headliner.  If the team can't upgrade and add advertising options to help pay the bills and make the team competitive, it could well be 200 years before the team hoists a World Series trophy.

I hope that Ricketts holds true to his word.  If the city doesn't approve the renovations, then he should look to relocate.  I guarantee Rosemont won't be the only suburb to offer up free land and incentives.

QUICK HIT: Drake Relays

I once again had the honor of serving as the infield announcer at the Drake Relays.  One of the best weekends of the year in my book.  This year, the weather was perfect, the stands were packed, and the records were falling. 

A few of the highlights, and trust me, there were many more:

Men's pole vault - London Games Rematch 

Could just be that it's my favorite event to watch, but the field was loaded, and the jumps were huge.  Bjorn Otto of Germany (London Silver Medalist) won the event, defeating the American record holder, Brad Walker, and London Gold Medalist Renaud Lauvillinie of France.  They were great to talk with on the infield - calling it one of the best crowds they've jumped in front of in some time.

High school boys 100m

The winner, Zach Skibinski from SC Heelan, also competes in the discus throw.  At least he did, until he tweaked a knee injury.  He's going to UNI to play football next year...as a defensive end.  Not too often you see a future collegiate defensive lineman win the 100m dash at the Relays.  Trust me, I feel sorry for the QB's in the MVC next year.

Women's 100 hurdles - London Games Rematch

Yes, Lolo finished fourth, but it lived up to the hype as the race of the afternoon.  Top four finishers were the four fastest times in the world.  What's lost in the Lolo defeat is the fact that the top 3, Queen Harrison, Kellie Wells, and Dawn Harper, are probably three of the top four hurdlers in the world right now. 

Men's Invitational Mile

The winner, Nick Willis of New Zealand, finished in 3:55:70, in a field with six runners under 4:00.  The crazy thing was how much faster he could have gone.  By the time he hit the home stretch, he had his hands in the air getting the crowd into the race.   After wards, he told me its not too often you have a crowd like this to cheer you - have to take advantage.  Good call.

Men's 400m Dash - London Games Rematch

The runner up, Jeremy Wariner, is a three time gold medalist for the USA, and a great ambassador for the sport.  He comes from a time (not all that long ago...lets be honest), when the USA owned this event.  Whether it was Michael Johnson, or Jeremy, or LeShawn Merritt, from about 1990-2008 the USA was unstoppable in the 400m.  This past Olympics, the USA didn't sniff the top of the podium.  A new generation of younger runners have taken up the helm.  One of them, Luguelin Santos of the Dominican Republic was the silver medalist in London, and he won the race going away on Friday night.  He ran at 44.74 and made it look easy.  It just felt like a small snapshot of the big picture.

Five Bold Early Season Predictions - MLB

Plenty of NFL draft conversation coming up on the show today, so I thought I'd go a different direction.  

Even though the MLB season is only 20 games old, and there's a looooong way to go, it's never too early to start making some wild predictions.  Here's five I think have a chance to be true.

1. Of the teams with the five highest payrolls, only 1 will make the postseason

Who it will be is still up for debate.  I could probably make a pretty strong case that zero will make it.

But of the Yankees, Dodgers, Angels, Phillies, and Red Sox, I'll bet four out of five will be watching the postseason from their couch.

2. Of the 10 highest paid players in the game, only 3 will make the All-Star game

Here's the list: A-Rod, Johan Santana, Cliff Lee, Mark Texiera, CC Sabathia, Joe Mauer, Prince Fielder, Tim Lincecom, Miguel Cabrera, Adrian Gonzalez.

It's a little tough to pick out who's going and who's not because of how pitchers are selected, but there's no way that A-Rod, Santana, Texiera, Lincecom, or Gonzalez are going anywhere.  I'd bet against a couple of the other guys as well.  Miggy and Prince are the only locks in my mind right now.

3. The Phillies hold a fire sale that includes Chase Utley, Cliff Lee, Jimmy Rollins, Roy Halladay, Jonathan Pappelbon, and others.

The team is just too old to win.  There's no way they can claw past both the Braves and Nats in the NL East, and they'll need to move parts to bring in the youth they'll need in the future.

I'd predict Utley and Rollins will be the first to go (good players at thin positions), followed by Mike Adams and Jonathan Pappelbon (above average bullpen arms).  Cliff Lee will get moved at the last minute, and the team will try to deal both Halladay and Ryan Howard unsuccessfully.  

4. Derek Jeter will retire

We know one great Yankee, Mariano Rivera, plans to hang up the cleats at the end of this season, and I'll predict Jeter will join him. 

Jeter will go down as one of the greatest players of his generation, and one of the best to ever don the Pinstripes.  I just he takes a lesson from one of the other greats of the last 20 years, Chipper Jones, and hangs it up while he's still on top.

5. The Atlanta Braves will sweep the major awards the NL.

Might be somewhat of a selfish prediction, but hear me out. 

Justin Upton will win the MVP going away if he continues at half the pace he's on.  Can't argue with that one.

Evan Gattis will win the rookie of the year, so long as he continues on his present pace.  All the impact mid season call-ups look to be in the AL (Profar, Myers, Bogaerts), and most of the top prospects in the NL are fighting injuries right now.

Cy Young is where this gets a little bit sticky, but the Braves have three legitimate contenders: Kris Medlen (who's stats are still unreal), Mike Minor (see previous), and Craig Kimbrel. 

It's not a lock, but it could happen.
