QUICK HIT: RG III's Wedding Gifts

In a move I just can't quite wrap my head around, hundreds of fans flocked to Bed, Bath, and Beyond and bought wedding gifts for RG III off his registry.

Griffin took the liberty of tweeting a pic of him with all the boxes yesterday:

While I understand supporting your favorite athlete, who goes out and buys the dude a gift from a home store? 

Just seems a little off to me. 

The comments section shows quite the mixed opinion as well.  I'm not sure what's worse - going out and buying the guy a gift and sending it to him, or posting a comment on his photos page asking for him to donate money to some cause.

QUICK HIT: Monday Thoughts

Some things from this past weekend that caught my eye.

- Orb didn't win the Preakness.  If you read the post on Friday, I felt pretty darn good about his chances.  The end result? I probably won't pay a whole lot of attention to the Belmont Stakes in three weeks.  The vast majority is probably with me.

- Miguel Cabrera smacks three home runs, and the Tigers still lose to the Rangers.  I'll be the shirt on my back that doesn't happen again this year.  The deeper meaning?  It could be the Tigers are in need of some bullpen help, which is well documented.  Doug Fister had a rough outing yesterday (4.2 IP, 5 ER), and the bullpen gave up a six-pack in relief.  Won't win too many games that way.  The other possibility?  The Rangers are really, really good.  As in, better than the previous two World Series teams good.  Wouldn't be shocked at all to see them in the October classic.

- Chad Johnson, formerly Chad Ochcocinco (or whatever he was called), got arrested today, after a warrant was issued for a probation violation.  He is to remained jailed until he posts $1000 bond.  Suppose he has the grand to get out?  Cause I'm not so sure.  

- Injuries are really starting to pile up for some MLB clubs.  Leading the charge are the Atlanta Braves.  The Bravos just lost Johnny Venters to Tommy John surgery, and are facing the same with Eric O'Flahrety.  Jordan Walden in on the DL with a shoulder problem, and the Braves are officially short their top 3 set up arms.  Are the Braves the next team to be decimated by injuries? 

- Hard to believe how good Thomas Vokoun has been in goal for the Penguins since he took over.  Too bad he gave up a shorthanded goal last night to send the game to 2 OT, otherwise the Pens would have a commanding 3-0 series edge.

- Bills DE Mario Williams continues his fight with his ex over a ring.  I hope this story goes away soon.  I just don't see it ending well for anyone.

- The Vikings new stadium looks sweet.  Funding questions seem to be getting answered.  Lets get this thing built.

QUICK HIT: Joe's Preakness Picks

The second jewel in the Triple Crown takes to the track at Pimlico - the 138th running of the Preakness Stakes.

Just nine horses will take the gate, including Kentucky Derby winner Orb.  Here's a few thoughts on the race, by horse:

1. Orb - Should win.  Looked great leding up to the Derby, came out of the race in great shape, and had a solid workout at Belmont last week.  Deserves to be the even money favorite.

2. Goldencents - hasn't taken a single step on a track since the Derby.  A big red flag when I look at the race.  I won't use him.

3. Titletown Five - has speed horse written all over him.  He'll set the early pace, but don't count on him being around at the end.

4. Departing - ran a decent race against what I'd call a "weak" field in the Illinois Derby.  Hasn't ran a race longer than 1 1/8th in his career.  Also hasn't impressed me in works since last race (April 20th)

5. Mylute - fifth at the Derby.  Probably a horse to use in the bottom half of tickets.  Has only won 1 race in his career, all the way back in December.  I'm just not convinced he can run with Orb.

6. Oxbow - was among those that got caught up in the insane pace in the Derby.  I like this horse more than most - just went out way too fast and got bumped coming around the turn.

7. Will Take Charge - finished 8th in the Derby, but could have been a factor had he not checked up when another horse drifted in front of him.  A horse to consider

8. Governor Charlie - Ran 1st against nobody in his last two races, and has never gone more than 1 1/8th.  Only 3 career starts - I just don't see it.

9. Itsmyluckyday - Loved this horse in the Derby, and he was never a factor.  Didn't look like he enjoyed running in the slop.  Still, he's run good races in Florida in the past.  Will have a jockey change this weekend, John Velazquez will pilot.

QUICK HIT: Wiggins Chooses Kansas

The undisputed #1 high school hoops prospect, Andrew Wiggins, has made his college choice...and its one that might not bode well for the Cyclones.

With Wiggins announcement he'll attend Kansas next season, it shifts the balance of power back to the Jayhawks, where it seems to have resided forever. 

So what does this mean for the Big 12 next year?

Before today, Oklahoma State looked like they'd be tough to beat, with Marcus Smart, Le"Bryan Nash, Phil Forte, and Markel Brown all returning. 

I might be the only one, but there's something just a little bit unsettling about this OSU team that leaves me with just a little bit of doubt heading into next season.    They wilted against KSU in Kansas City when they were the better team on paper, and lost to Oregon in their first NCAA game in quiet fashion. 

Oklahoma State should have been tougher in the Big 12 tournament then what they were, and certainly should have played more than one game in the Dance.  I'm not ready to hand the crown to the Cowboys by any means.

On the other hand, I feel pretty good about the Jayhawks' chances now.  The newcomers are superb: they get the #1 recruit in the country in Wiggins, another McDonald's All-American in Wayne Seldon, two sharpshooters in Frankamp and Green, and a couple of other nice pieces. 

Plus, the returners for Kansas will be better than most think.  By the end of the season, F Perry Ellis was arguably their best player, and PG Naadir Tharpe looks like he's ready to take the next step. 

As for the rest of the conference?  A lot of question marks.  Iowa State will probably be better than most people think right now (a common trait of Fred Hoiberg teams), but still lose a ton of senior talent and leadership.  I still see Iowa State as a top-half of the Big 12 type team, even with the losses, but they're clearly not at the level of OSU or KU.

Baylor will also make some noise in the Big 12 next year, fueled by big man Isiah Austin, who decided to return to school for another year.  But without PG Pierre Jackson (NBA draft), and with Scott Drew at the helm, its just tough to pick Baylor much higher than third in the league. 

The bottom line?  A lot of people thought this might finally be the year that Bill Self and Kansas finished off the top line. 

With today's news, don't count on it.

Tiger Woods wins the Players Championship

A few quick thoughts from Tiger Woods win at the Players Championship this past weekend:

- The dude is the best golfer in the world right now, but might be the worst dropper.  This is one of the plays in golf that shouldn't have nearly this much drama.  While the drop in question didn't cost Tiger any ground this weekend, just the fact it made the news is enough to cause some concern.  Most ten year olds understand this concept.  Probably worth working through for the future.

- Its hard to believe Woods has only won this tournament one time in the past, and it was a dozen years ago.  TPC Sawgrass is a wonderful course featuring one of the most iconic holes in golf, but doesn't seem like the kind of place Woods would have struggled for so long.

- Sergio doesn't like Tiger.  Seems like he never really has.  In Woods' defense, he really can't help it if the crowd goes nuts just because he's digging through his bag.  If Tiger was up taking practice cuts while Sergio was standing over the ball, its probably a different story.  Same deal if Sergio is actually in his back swing. 

- Sergio's meltdown was in the John Daly league: Six shots on the final two holes of golf's "fifth major."  Sort of reminds me a few years ago when Phil Mickelson smacked it into the beer tent at the US Open when he just need to coast in to victory.  It also reminds me of what I'm capable of every time I hit the course.

- Forget David Lingmerth.  And Jeff Maggert, Kevin Streelman, Ryan Palmer, and a host of others near the top of the leader board.  Woods won the tournament convincingly, but Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia (even with the meltdown) and Brandt Snedeker all finished in the top 10.  It's still a month away from the US Open, but the best in the world seemed to rise to the occasion this weekend.  Here's hoping it sets up something special at the next major.

- Shout out to Vijay Singh, the king of stupid comments and actions in golf, who is suing the PGA Tour over his alleged use of "deer antler spray."  Remember his comments a few years ago about women playing golf at Augusta? As for his lawsuit, this type of thing usually works out oh so well for the player (sarcasm).  By the way, did you miss Vijay on the course this past weekend?  Probably because he didn't make the cut.  Guess that spray isn't doing that much for you after all, Vijay (not sarcasm).
