QUICK HIT: Urlacher Retires
By Joe Quinn (@joequinnshow)
Brian Urlacher decided to hang it up today, a guy that will someday go into the NFL Hall of Fame having played for just one team: The Chicago Bears.
There's no doubt every Bears fan was cringing at the thought of Urlacher suiting up for another team, namely the Vikings, who seemed to have a need for a MLB.
There's just something special about a hall-of-fame caliber player that only put on one uniform through his entire career. I think Urlacher has a chance to be a first-ballot guy.
There aren't too many in the hall of fame right now that will fall into those two categories: First ballot, with just one team. If he's able to pull it off (not a guarantee on the first ballot), he'd join a pretty select group.
Here's the list I came up with:
Troy Aikman - Cowboys
Chuck Beninarik - Eagles
Raymond Berry - Colts
Mel Blout - Steelers
Terry Bradshaw - Steelers
Jim Brown - Browns
Dick Butkus - Bears
John Elway - Broncos
Dan Fouts - Chargers
Darrell Green - Redskins
Joe Greene - Steelers
Jack Ham - Steelers
John Hannah - Patriots
Jim Kelly - Bills**
Jack Lambert - Steelers
Tom Landry - Cowboys Coach
Steve Largent - Seahawks
Bob Lilly - Cowboys
Dan Marino - Dolphins
Anthony Munoz - Bengals
Ray Nitschke - Packers
Chuck Noll - Steelers Coach
Leo Nomellini - 49ers
Jonathan Odgen - Ravens
Merlin Olson - Rams
Jim Otto - Raiders
Jim Parker - Colts
Walter Payton - Bears
Barry Sanders - Lions
Gale Sayers - Bears
Mike Singletary - Bears
Bart Starr - Packers
Roger Staubach - Cowboys
Ernie Stautner - Steelers
Lawrence Taylor - Giants
Gene Upshaw - Raiders
Randy White - Cowboys
Larry Wilson- Cardinals
Sammy Baugh - Redskins
Joseph Carr - NFL President
George Halas - Bears**
Tim Mara - Owner (Giants)
** - Played with other non-NFL franchises
I'm an baseball guy, and take a look at the list of guys that played for just one club (list from NY Times and Baseball Hall of Fame):
Yankees: Earle Combs, Bill Dickey, Joe DiMaggio, Whitey Ford, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle, Phil Rizzuto;
Dodgers: Roy Campanella, Don Drysdale, Sandy Koufax, Pee Wee Reese, Jackie Robinson;
Giants: Carl Hubbell, Travis Jackson, Mel Ott, Bill Terry, Ross Youngs;
Red Sox: Bobby Doerr, Jim Rice, Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski;
Pirates: Roberto Clemente, Bill Mazeroski, Willie Stargell, Pie Traynor;
Indians: Bob Feller, Addie Joss, Bob Lemon;
White Sox: Luke Appling, Red Faber, Ted Lyons;
Orioles: Jim Palmer, Cal Ripken, Brooks Robinson;
Reds: Johnny Bench, Bid McPhee;
Detroit Tigers: Charlie Gehringer, Al Kaline;
Cardinals: Bob Gibson, Stan Musial;
Royals: George Brett;
Cubs: Ernie Banks;
Phillies: Mike Schmidt;
Padres: Tony Gwynn;
Senators: Walter Johnson;
Twins: Kirby Puckett;

You can probably go ahead and add Chipper Jones (Braves), Derek Jeter (Yankees), and Mariano Rivera (Yankees) to that list someday soon.
Pretty elite company, don't you think?
