Raise your hand, who had the Indians in 1st place albeit being hotly pursued by the Royals in the AL Central?
Okay, how about those of you you had the Orioles leading the AL East after 10 games, okay, not as many of you.
I know were "only 10 games in" but those are two of the good stories so far in baseball. Does that mean they'll be there at baseball's first unofficial checkpoint, Memorial Day, no, but we're used to those teams being out of it by the end of April most years.
Last night in the cab on my way to the hotel, I happened to look out the window only to spot a beautiful bride, in her gown, walking bare feet, but slugging on a bottle of champagne.
Gotta love Vegas, I wonder if I'll feel this way after another 8 days?
After Tiger got hot on Friday, I changed my travel plans so that I wouldn't be in the air during the final round of the Masters. Am I ever glad that I did!
What an amazing afternoon of golf, and yes I know the latest is always the greatest, but I can't ever recall a final round where we had as many players at the top of the board, wow.
In the end it took making birdie on the final 4 holes to win the green jacket. Amazing.
Off to the airport; lunch meeting in Tucson followed by a dinner meeting in Las Vegas, guessing I'll sleep well tonight.
I can't recall an athlete who was so much better in his chosen sport, only to become so ordinary in such a short period of time than Tiger Woods.
Most weekends if he wasn't winning, he was at least in contention, now he's Larry Mize.
You knew that if Tiger needed to make a big putt to force a playoff or win a tournament that the ball was a cinch to find it's way to the bottom of the cup, now he's Davis Love.
When he showed up Sunday, all decked out in red, his fellow players would concede that they're playing for second at best, that doesn't happen anymore, he's just one of the tour players trying to shoot a good round.
There lies the problem for the game, Tiger and his legions of fans no longer expect to see a low round they hope to see a low round.
I hate to be the suits who are responsible for negotiating golfs next TV contracts, they can no longer promise that golfs one time golden goose is going to be in contention on the weekends.
Get ready for cable channels like Tru TV and Versus, with the exception of the majors that's where golf is heading.
Wait a second, I thought all of the players that were involved in the "program reset" fallout were cleared to practice. None of the team Doctor's thought that something might be wrong with the CB that lost 20 pounds through the ordeal.
But, but, but, Kirk on March 23 at your press conference you told us that "they'd all be out there".
Well coach, Willie Lowe's not out there, and he won't be out there, in fact he may never play football again. Lowe contradicted previous Iowa mis-information when he told ESPN that "Only a few of the (rhabdo) players are back to full speed that I know of".
Athletic Director, Gary Barta, stated that "it's our hope he remains a Hawkeye". Of course it is, after all once you leave the nest it isn't as easy to control the news cycle.
And then right on cue we find these quotes from understanding, compassionate Hawk fans around the country.
"He's just trying to cash in"
"P**sy"
"He saw the depth chart and took the easy way out"
"If the coaches say they can all practice, I'm going to believe them"
"Typical national media non-story, here we go again"
I know, "this happens everywhere" and Iowa football has learned from the incident can't we just close the book?
Ah, no actually I think their are a few more chapters still be written.
Yesterday was an eye opening day in the world of journalism. Tony K and the PTI show actually used a tweet from someone they'd never heard of, or had any background on as being gospel.
Apparently ESPN never thought to check the tweeters history, so I thought I'd "dive for loose balls" this morning for them. Among the numerous show promoting tweets I found these gems.
With Mizzou already having hired Haith, Shaka Smart was willing to listen to Mizzou.
Peter Jok leaving Roosevelt headed to Dowling
Nebraska Iowa Insight Bowl done deal (2010)
Matt Woodley headed to Oregon to join Dana Altman (2010)
Mike O'Connor out at Dowling (2010)
Hoiberg hires Doug Copper as an assistant (2010)
Bruce Pearl to Iowa 4 yrs 10 million according to Tenn staffers (2010)
Harrison Barnes may indeed stay at UNC, that's not the point. The point is at no time did Barnes, his mother or anyone else say that on Tuesday April 5th there would be an announcement that he's returning to school.
Finally, to be clear, this isn't an attack on the tweeter, he's like a brother to me, rather and indictment of whats wrong with journalism today.
In case you weren't clear, Mike Nixon's placement of his son Peter and his "adopted son" Peter Jok was about academics first and then basketball.
Mike please don't pee on my shoes and tell me it's raining, lets call it for what it is.
If academics were really important here, the boys would have finished the school year at Roosevelt and then transferred. You don't go through 80% of the school year and magically transfer to a school that's at the same stage of the school curriculum.
The March 30 deadline was all about starting the transfer clock, not looking after whats best for the boys academically, at least not this year.
Meddling parents drive me up a wall and while I can't blame Jeff Horner for laying out the welcome mat for Jok, it'll be interesting to see where the 'throw in" in the deal fits as far as playing time.
It's time for the Iowa High School Athletic Association to change the 90 day transfer rule to 180 days, maybe not in every case but certainly ones as transparent as this one.
School first, my youknowhat. I've got to go wipe off my shoes
The Fiesta Bowl story is an eye opener to say the least, in fact in borders on criminal. Couple that story with last nights piece on PTV,"Money and March Madness, and sprinkle in tonight's HBO investigative piece on the corruption in college sports and boom you've got a PR Headache to deal with.
Lastly, please read my March 24th blog. Since no one will ask why, I came up with my own theory and I think I don't think it's far fetched.
Open day tomorrow in MLB, I can remember a time not that long ago that I could hardly sleep the night before. Guessing I'll sleep well tonight.
Would someone please ask Chris Doyle or Kirk Ferentz why Iowa football decided to put the players through the workout?
What triggers the workout, there's no rhyme or reason from what I can see. First time it's used is in their second year at Iowa , then for some reason it's shelved for almost 4 years, only to be used again 3 years later, and then put on mothballs for 37 months.
Why was this, why not every year, why won't someone ask this question? Does Doyle simply wake up one morning and decide to put the players through the most taxing workout they've ever gone through? I doubt it!
Why? What's so difficult about asking why? Someone please ask why?
