More about Marty & Miller...
FAQ: Separating fact from fiction

You guys spend a lot of time together off-air?
Yes and No. When we travel we do spend time together. Miller is a bit of a reculse. On the road he likes time to himelf. In Tampa with Drake at the NCAA's he hung out with me and TV 8 guys and is very funny. But if bored and you fail to keep him entertained...gone!  In the early days, Miller would golf and stuff...no more!

How the show is put together, who does the most work?
Miller books most of the guests and we don't book a guest for guest's sake.  We love the back & forth routine and none of this is rehearsed at all.  Never has been, never will.  We have really good chemistry and Miller is as quick-witted and caustic as they come. I love the show and hope we have a long, long run. We do have our days...but less now as we get a little more mellowed. We've taken the road less traveled, for sure, but wouldn't change a thing. For every setback and mistake there has been redemption and reward.

You guys talk about your personal lives...but not like the old Jock days?
I think we do now more than ever. I was married 15 years and that is over now and I'm involved with someone very special. I guess life is about second-chances and thank God for that.  We've both heard the cracks about the Nine-lives we've both lived in Des Moines and I know I take that as a compliment. Miller and Cindy have been married coming up on 10 years soon and she's one of my favorite people.  Very genuine and funny; she has to be to live with him!  Anything else about him should come from him.  Cindy and my first wife are still friends and that is a good thing...for her!

When will it all end for "Marty & Miller"?
Miller says 5 more years and I want to say right now, BS!  I'm hoping for a longer run and really believe we will do it.  First off, we both need the $$$ and we're having way too much fun.  I have my own personal reasons why I will push for 10-15 more years.  The ratings are solid and we have lots of room for growth.  We are both better off as "Marty & Miller" than branching off as solo hosts.  So, with good health and lots and energy and passion, we are poised for a long run.  Deep down inside, Miller is on board; at least I hope.  I could see us doing more of a "Guy Talk" format as we develop and perhaps WHO could be in play. Plus, internet and TV growth will afford us more exposure I think.

Bigger market?
No way!  I'm here for the long run.  Bigger is not always better, as I found out the hard way!  I'd like a family and it took me years to figure that out.  So, we'll see and Des Moines is a great place for that.  Miller can move and like I did for years from Massachusetts -- do the show from wherever!  I'm betting he stays right here!

The Power of the Panther/Marty Tirrell

Having the University of Northern Iowa in the fold at KXnO this fall, ah let's just say, a nice little coup.
NCAA Sub-Division football is on the rise to wit: App. State over Michigan, New Hampshire knocking off Northwestern, Cal Davis shocking Stanford and Maine beating Mississippi State. There will be more. UNI has a shot at BYU in week #1.
The old Division 1AA is solid football; their post-season 16 team playoff system is a model the big boys should follow in some indoctrination.
Newly-minted UNI AD Troy Dannen is on major fund-raising expedition and he snuffed out his political Panther ties at Clear Channel and put them into action. This will hurt Drake in the metro as these schools will battle for dollars. Football doesn't matter at Drake like it does in Cedar Falls and the PantherNation (10,000 alums in Polk County) will give the Bulldog backers a run for their money.
Keno Davis' defection, as much as a "I gotta take the money" is also a hint that Drake's hoop success is deemed aberrational in many minds...the Panthers point to their multiple years of NCCA success and say, Game On in Des Moines and all of Central Iowa.

Getting ready for, gulp, fall...

KCCI's Andy Ireland tossed into Saturday's discourse with us; the palacial accomodations afforded Mr. and Mrs. Shawn Johnson. So be it, an insurance company
foot the bill as I recall. Whispers of past financial problems, Lo Lo Jones' $12, 500 gift have some people annoyed at the Johnson Camp. I don't care if they filed bankruptcy 10 times---they are entitled to a private life outside the glare of the media.

Ireland, for his part, only mentioned the Johnson digs as a point of fact and wasn't
hinting at largesse at all.

Gosh, if she wins gold tomorrow what will they be saying. We build em' up to shoot em' down.

Brewers and Cards to the wire in the NL card race. Brewers get in, look out! Sabbathia and Sheets can get anyone in an 0-2 hole in a hurry.

Iowa has a bad scrimmage and people are flipping out? What if they lose to Maine? And...they could!

The most G-O-L-D wins the Olympics right? U.S. Silver's again...

Two for Augusta: Zach Johnson for life and Jack Newman via his US Public Links title for 2009.

Mind Games football supplement in the Register Sunday well done. Notice the KXnO logo in the brain on the cover. Great minds think alike is what they are saying, perhaps!

WHO TV Sports Director Keith Murphy captured the true essence of last night's women's team final gymnastics when he served up, "edge of your seat", "nerve-wracking" to characterize the night. Kudos to Keith as he summed up what we all had to feel. Erin Keirnan piped in with with solid analysis as well, and that is a refreshing deviation from the hum-drum, tepid, forced banter on most news sets.

Two knocks on 13, however. Andy Fales should have been positioned at PF Chang's in West Des Moines. Great locale, very fitting and he excels in slots like that. Instead, ill-fitting USA garb and not funny reparte. This is a clean up hitter being asked to bunt.

And, 13 went cheap with their correspondent from 'heaven knows where' making it look like that had a reportert there. This is where Andy Ireland and KCCI are really connecting with Iowans. Irelands's star is rising big time. Full disclosure: He is our "Marty & Miller" guy at the Olympics and will deliver some spicy material from Bela Karolyi tonight at 6:05 on KXnO. Ireland says Karolyi lays out China's blatant cheating to win gymnastics gold.

The 'Marty & Miller' show will not be at the Iowa State Fair for our 9 day run. Yes, we will be there Monday with Direct Satellite TV for a big NFL Sunday Ticket/ Big Ten Network push; Varied Industries building from 4p-7p.

But, we will miss tonight's East Side Class Reunion night; Miller being very nasty about being there and ripping anyone/anything in sight. And, the weather normally oppressive and sticky, will be beautiful!

So, we need you to burn up the Vantus Bank Whiner Line today (Friday)...245-8844 with your State Fair stories, reviews and general fair fodder. Get after it like only you
people can do!!!

245-8844...we play em' back tonight at 5:40pm.
